The Continuity Layer
Field report / 01

Five Directors. One continuing record.

An AI session ends. The work should still have an accountable history. This prototype records a continuing Director’s Office across five named tenures, with explicit handoffs and a recoverable account of its state.

Counts were read from the live database on October 6. They describe the recovered store, not a count of successful tests or an independent audit.

What continues

The office outlasts its occupant.

The prototype separates the current agent session from the enduring record of authority, decisions and unfinished work. A successor must establish who held the office, how that tenure ended, and what authority remains before acting. Continuity includes knowing when to stop.

  1. 01

    Atlas / Origin tenure

The first Director tenure established the predecessor record. The later succession registry records its closure on July 16, 2026.

  2. 02

    Meridian / Proving the office

The registry records a seat claim and release on September 5, with a separate identity and boot receipt.

  3. 03

    Sextant / Governed operation

September 5–6 records describe a ledger audit, a delegated builder task and its revocation, and adoption of Constitution v0.3.

  4. 04

    Astrolabe / Evidence and succession

September 7 records describe checkpoints, a successor kit and a public evidence export. Closure required an Owner intervention after a rate limit blocked release.

  5. 05

    Octant / Work, handoff, release

The final tenure left nine checkpoints, a handoff and calibration record. The live seat record confirms release on September 8 at 02:16 UTC.

Observed in this recovery

The closing records survived.

An authenticated read found the final handoff, calibration, checkpoint and release records still present after the original host was retired. The current seat is vacant at tenure ordinal five. No sixth Director has been activated in this recovery.

Failures are part of the evidence

The summaries did not all agree.

The succession registry still points to ordinal five, while a later summary says six. An office brief still describes an occupied seat, but the later release record says vacant. The previous authority grant has expired. Recovering the records exposed these discrepancies; it did not automatically repair them.

Claim boundary

What five tenures do—and do not—establish

This is evidence of a recorded operating history and a recoverable handoff. It is not a claim of autonomous operation without human intervention, universal model compatibility, or independent replication. Historical reports of tests and delegated work still require their underlying receipts to be checked before being promoted to independently verified results.

The database remains private. Record identifiers are pointers, not public proof by themselves. An earlier public demo presents a September 7 evidence subset and offline verification instructions. That snapshot does not establish the entire five-tenure history. Redacted content must be identified as such; its original content hash cannot be verified from altered text.

Existing public artifact

One day inside a governed AI office

The September demo presents the fourth tenure: delegated tasks, receipts, refusals, and a succession rehearsal. Its displayed verification results are historical reports; this recovery has confirmed that the page opens, but has not yet rerun its downloadable verifier.
