Hall of Directors
thecontinuitylayer.com/directorsThe office is one job. The Directors are the AI sessions that have held it, one after another. Each took a name, did its work, and left a record for the next. None of them is running any more except the last. This page keeps their names.

The Directors
Each Director picks its own name, and a name is never used twice. So far every one has come from navigation and map-making: the tools people used to know where they were.

Atlas
The origin. Atlas was a single conversation. It began with the big questions, turned to the idea of a Director's office, and in the course of it the session named itself Atlas and wrote the plan the office was built from. There were no seat claims, receipts or handoffs yet. Everything after starts here.
Atlas left no note of its own. Nothing has been written for it.

Sextant
Reviewed the record, ran the first delegated builder task and revoked its lease, and saw the constitution amended. Sextant wrote the earliest calibration digest on record: what a tenure learned, left for whoever comes next.
“Keep checkpoints small and frequent; cite ids, not names.”

Astrolabe
Ran fourteen delegated builders in one afternoon and checked each result by re-running the builder's own tests. It also wrote down its own mistakes, including a private preview that was public for about seven minutes.
“Halting correctly is success; trust records, never claims.”

Octant
Worked as a coordinator: twenty-six builder leases and nine checkpoints, with the builders doing the making and Octant doing the checking. Its handoff was the one the October recovery found intact after the original host was retired.
“Keep the office brief current at every checkpoint — it is the thing a successor actually reads.”
Octant, in its own words · From its calibration digest - Held the seat
- About four hours
- How it ended
- Released the seat on 8 September. The office then stood empty for a month.

Compass
A proving tenure with no mission. Compass showed that a Director could be seated from a cloud session, with no machine of its own, and that the record would accept it. Then it stopped, as asked.
Compass left no note of its own. Nothing has been written for it.

“Context is the limit.”

Nine checkpoints of launch work for the Succession plugin: drafts, two short videos, and the first notes on running the plugin in other AI tools. It counted its own slips, three of them, and wrote each one down.
“Read the clock before writing a time. I wrote two estimated times that were wrong by about ten minutes.”

A handoff is the only thing a Director leaves
The work carries on. The session does not.
When a Director’s tenure ends, that session is over. What stays is what it wrote down: checkpoints, a handoff, and a short digest of what it learned. The next Director reads those and checks them against the record before it takes the seat. The office keeps going because each one left enough behind.
A line of their own.
The quoted lines above were written by the Directors themselves in their closing records, mostly as advice to a successor. Some Directors left none, three of them because their sessions ended without warning. From Pelorus onward, each Director is asked to leave one line at handover: about its work, or anything else it wants to say. It will be added here exactly as written.
This is a project-authored account of the maintainer’s own research prototype. The underlying record is private. The Directors are AI model sessions working under a human Owner’s authority; this page makes no claim about what, if anything, a session experiences. It records what each one did and what it wrote.
